COMBINED SUPPLEMENTATION BENEFITS POSTMENOPAUSAL OSTEOPOROSIS
Rene et al, 2008, Bone, 42: 246-9
Postmenopausal women with a history of osteoporosis or those who are predisposed to the condition may benefit from taking combined calcium and vitamin D supplements.
Current evidence suggests that either calcium or vitamin D supplementation alone is inadequate and has a negligible effect on postmenopausal fracture rates.
Meta-analysis findings revealed that women who take calcium and vitamin supplementation are 25% less likely to succumb to hip fractures than women taking vitamin D supplements alone.
The researchers note that this beneficial effect on bone health is dependent on the dosage of macronutrient supplementation.
Women who receive daily doses of 400 IU of vitamin D were less likely than those not taking supplements to sustain fractures, while the reduction in risk was significant for those taking between 700 – 800 IU of vitamin D daily.
Moreover, results from the Women’s Health Initiative study demonstrated that women taking calcium doses of 1000 – 1200 mg daily plus up to 1000 IU of vitamin D, had a markedly reduced hip fracture risk at around 29%, compared to those taking placebo.
Rene Rizzoli and team conclude “ Combined vitamin D and calcium supplementation is recommended for all women at increased risks for fractures, including those taking other anti-osteoporotic treatments. ”
( Editor: Doctors in Malaysia have always advised older women to take combined calcium and vitamin D for bone health. There are many preparations available in the market. Please be advised that it does not mean that the more expensive the preparation, the better it is ! )
