SECRETARIAT NEWS

June 2007

Dear Members

This year, the Malaysian Menopause Society has turned 10 years, marking an important milestone in the development of our society. The membership has expanded and the society has continued to maintain its objectives; ranging from promoting education locally to liaising with similar groups internationally to disseminate knowledge in the study of both menopause and andropause.

The 6th Malaysian Congress on Menopause was held at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur from April 6 – 8, 2007. This year’s theme was ‘The Return of Hormone Therapy’. According to the immediate Past President, Prof. Dr. Nik Mohd Nasri Nik Ismail, this theme was chosen to update the participants in the management of the menopausal women, a field that is expanding and which will continue to be important due to the increased life expectancy of women. To make the scientific sessions interesting, Dr. S Raman, Scientific Chairman, had invited eminent speakers to talk on psychological aspects of menopause as well as medical problems related to ear, nose and throat during menopause. With the combined faculty of both overseas and local speakers, the participants were able to attain sufficient knowledge to manage menopausal issues from a broader aspect. This was useful for the practising clinicians.

The 10th AGM was held on the 7th April 2007 at Berjaya Times Square, marking the end of EXCO 2005-2007, and the beginning of the newly elected EXCO 2007-2009 under the leadership of Dr. Liew Fah Onn. As a life member, I have seen a tremendous amount of effort being made by the previous EXCOs to bring the Malaysian Menopause Society (MMS) to the level it is today. We, the current EXCO, will endeavour to continue to scale greater heights in achieving one of the many goals set by MMS; i.e., to host both the Asia Pacific Menopause Federation Congress and International Menopause Congress one day. In the meantime, the Malaysian Menopause Society will continue to play its important role of educating the public about menopause as well as andropause via Berita Menopos, MMS website and public forums.

Various sub-committees have already been identified to organise activities which include public awareness campaigns, membership development programmes and the continuous update of the MMS website to name a few. Also, we are looking forward to celebrate World Menopause Day 2007 on the 21st October 2007. With Dr. Ho Choon Moy organising the event, I am sure it will be a memorable one. The other important event will be the Fellowship Nite 2007 (date to be confirmed), to be organised by Ms. Elaine Leong, Ms Lisa Lum Lai Oi and Ms. Sakuntala.

Last but not least I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members for electing me as the Honorary Secretary.

Best wishes!

Mdm Hardip Kaur Dhillon,
Hon. Secretary
