MMS Walk For Health 2009

Report by Mrs Jagjeet Singh (Mrs J)

It was a beautiful cool Sunday morning on 11 October 2009 when 22 participants made their way just after dawn to the Taman Tun Recreation Park for the MMS Walk for Health, the first physical activity organised by the new MMS committee.

The sound of Daniel Boone’s popular Beautiful Sunday was heard from a distance as it attracted other Sunday morning walkers and joggers to this spot of lively movement and jazzercise. The sound of birds chirping and a lark singing in the vicinity added to the delightful surroundings as the participants prepared themselves to begin.

Led by organizer and leader Mrs J, the walk began with a warm up session comprising loosening-up, cardio and stretches combining line dance moves and jazzercise for a total body workout. The gentle warm-up prepared the participants for the brisk walk around the lake and a subsequent uphill climb.

It was fun watching members and non-members mingling and socializing with other members of the public who have made this way of life their routine Sunday morning activity. The red Nike bands worn on the right wrist distinguished MMS members from the general public.

Cameraman, Daniel, was kept busy snapping away to get as many photos as possible for the MMS website and the increasingly popular Berita Menopos.

After the walk, the walkers were treated to mineral water, gifts and a scrumptious breakfast of hot rawa thosai (thosai cooked with finely-sliced onions , carrots etc) ,chicken curry and mutton paratel (dry curry) , freshly- fried ikan tenggiri, prawn sambal, iced Milo or ginger tea at the Kana Curry House in Petaling Jaya. Although the venue for breakfast was some distance away, the convoy of 10 cars arrived at their destination by 8.15am as planned without a hitch, starved after the walk and eager to put back the calories they lost!

The special goodies, gifts and generous breakfast were courtesy of pharmaceutical companies Bayer Schering and MSD as well as Pantai Hospital Cheras. The purpose of the event was to encourage a healthy lifestyle among men and women especially at menopausal age when the tendency to put on weight increases, with reduced metabolic rates and physical activity.

If you missed the Walk, don’t fret. Watch out for more activities involving physical fitness in Coming Up (Page 37), where we bring you more exciting adventures with MMS!
